If you know me at all, it comes as no surprise when I crash mountain biking. This time especially sucked because I was having a phenomenal ride on the Wasatch Crest. It rained the day before so the dirt was packed and tacky and I was just feeling really confident... I know, I know ... confidence is not necessarily a good thing.
In my attempt to avoid some tubeless tire puncturing granite rock took my attention away for the tree to my right. The handle bar jerked clockwise and threw me from my bike. I landed on my right shoulder blade and barrel rolled to my feet. I look in the woods below and my from wheel is tacoed. It was worse than in the picture because luckily my 250 lbs friend was able to use his body mass to bend the wheel so that it would at least roll in the fork. I looked at my helmet and it was cracked in multiple locations when I got back to my truck. I think things could have been much worse. My shoulder is sore and I have so pretty good road rash.

Better the helmet is cracked and not your head.

I don't mountain bike anymore, but a few years ago on my old road bike, I nailed a pothole and literally fell against a short stone wall. The bike was fine, I was not. Got my shoulder and my hip and went down my leg too. My new bike has managed to keep me up, or I've managed to protect most of it's paint job, not sure which honestly.
It looks like it's time for a new helmet, and also maybe look at solid wheels maybe? Carbon is very expensive, but might not cost you so much if it can take drop a few times. I'd shop around, maybe even ask the local shop what they think.

Mountain bike crashers of Oppo, UNITE!!! I'm pretty good at it too, because the dudes I ride with are faster than me.

Ah man crashing on the road... That's gotta hurt. That's some good road rash. I would much rather slide my skin against the dirt than concrete or pavement any day.
My friend I was riding with works for Black Diamond, who bought out POC. He hooked me up with this doozy...
As for wheels, I'm sticking with aluminum wheels ain't no doubt about that. As a aerospace engineerer carbon fiber is the Kate Upton of rigid materials but I can't afford to drop 2 g's on a carbon wheel set. Anyways the crash wasn't caused by the wheel so I'm not worried too much about my setup

That's one nice helmet right there. I've got a simple Nishiki that does the job, and hasn't met the ground yet.
I just meant some different more durable wheel. I would love a set of CF wheels, but no chance I can afford that right now. That and I like my wheels right now.

Those certainly look nice.
I nosed around to see if anything looked good to me, and these would look amazing on my bike ...definitely don't have that budget though...not my bike, but nearly identical.
